Omega 3 deficiency might be more of a probability than a possibility.

Now, I do not want to bore you with all sorts of scientific data. but I will have to use some to explain the reason of our potential deficiency.

Omega 3-6 and 9 all contain fatty acids. Omega 3 and 6 have the essential fatty acids that the body cannot manufacture. The acids in Omega 9 are not technically essential. If we have enough Omega 3 and 6 in our body it would be able to produce  a limited amount of Omega 9 fatty acids.

Before we started processing foods and eating fast foods our intake of omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids was pretty evenly balanced.  Omega 3 can be found in flax seed, flax seed oil, canola oil and leafy green vegetables. But these foods do not contain DHA/EPA which we can only find in fatty fish and the green-lipped mussel.

Omega 6 comes from nuts, grains, seeds and their oils. also in a limited amount from grain fed animals.

By eating  processed foods and fast foods we take in a large quantity of Omega 6.

The ratio between Omega 6 and Omega 3 should be  1 : 1 But even a ratio of 3 : 1 would be acceptable.  But right now the ratio is 20 : 1

Why is the ratio between Omega 6 and Omega 3 so important?

You see, according to Dr. Weil the hormones that come from these fatty acids have quite opposite  affects. The Omega 6 hormones increase infections,  blood clotting  and cell proliferation. Omega 3 hormones will do the opposite and will decrease these functions.

The fact that there is such an imbalance between these two Omegas could maybe explain the rise of asthma, heart disease and neurodegenerative diseases,  since they all find their causes in inflammation of the body.

The medical community is even starting to think that this imbalance between the two omegas might cause obesity, depression, dyslexia, hyperactivity and even violence.

Dr. Joseph Giblen is the world’s  leading authority on the relation between intake of fat and mental health. He is a psychiatrist  at the National Institute of Health.

He’s convinced of the benefits of consuming Omega 3 fatty acids where mental health is concerned. Especially the fatty acids that come from salmon, mackerel, other fatty fish and last, but not least those from the green-lipped mussels.

Some people believe they have to take Omega3-6-9 supplements.

Why?

We already get too much Omega 6.  So much, actually that it overrides the benefits of the Omega 3. We need Omega 3 supplements because we do not get enough of these in our regular diet. Once we have attained a good balance between Omega 6 and Omega 3 our body will benefit from that and our body will also be able to make Omega 9, which could be supplemented by olive oil and olives

Prevent Omega 3 deficiency and start consuming green-lipped-mussel oil.
